총평

2023 미래작가상 공모에는 개인의 이야기를 재구성하거나 대상의 표면을 필터링 없이 포착한 작업들이 많았으며 각자만의 시각으로 사진이미지를 생산해내고 있었다. 역대최고의 참여자 수인 328명을 기록하였으며 작업의 시작점에서 깊이 있게 고민하고 있는 지원자들의 태도를 느낄 수 있었다. 심사과정은 1차 온라인 심사에서 총 9명의 작업이 선발되었으며 2차 인터뷰 심사에서 심사위원의 전원 합의로 최종 5인의 수상자를 선정하였다.

김가은의 “어떤, 어떤 장면” 작업은 엄마와의 관계에서 좁혀지지 않는 거리감을 이미지로 시각화하고 있으며 엄마를 이해하기 위해 노력하는 과정을 담아내고 있다. 박하은의 “Feeling in Between”은 어른이 되어가는 과도기적 과정 속에 있는 이들의 불안감을 인물, 풍경, 정물 등의 방식으로 구사한다. 송상현의 “병원”은 사진이라는 매체로 윤동주의 발자취를 따라가는 작업으로 그에 관한 모든 기록물을 수집하듯이 촬영하고 있으며 윤동주의 시선과 그가 바라보았을 풍경을 기록한다. 박정윤의 “NECAMERAMANCY”는 에세이 필름 작업으로 작가에게 특별한 의미를 지니고 있는 자동필름카메라를 대상으로 강령술을 하여 기묘한 영상 퍼포먼스를 담은 작업이다. 홍준협의 “타임머신”은 두 인물 간의 섬세한 감정을 드러내고 있으며 보는 이로 하여금 이야기의 흐름에 자연스럽게 스며들게 한다. 2023 미래작가상 수상자가 차세대 작가로서 성장하기를 기대해 본다. 김세진

미래작가상은 2022년에 영상부분이 신설되어 올해에는 사진과 영상분야에서 각 3명과 2명의 수상작이 선정되었다. 심사의 기준으로 가장 큰 비중을 둔 앞으로의 작업적 성장 가능성과 더불어 전달하고자 하는 작품의 주제가 간결하며 집중적으로 잘 표현되고 있는가 그리고 사용하는 매체에 대한 이해와 숙련도를 고려하여 심사에 임하였다. 사진의 경우 재단의 역사에 비례해 적정 수준의 작품들이 다수였으나 이제 시작인 영상분야의 경우 수작을 가린다기보다는 보편적 기준에 적절하게 부합했는가에 만족하며 수상작을 선정하였음을 밝히고자 한다. 박하은의 사진들은 성장기를 거치는 시기의 알 수 없는 아픔과 이해할 수 없이 나약하고 불안한 감정들을 탐구한다. 그 탐구의식은 사진을 통해 기록하고 수집함과 동시에 이론의 원천을 찾아 헤매기도 하는 것이다. 그럼으로 현실이라고 하는 단단한 굴레와 그것을 뛰어넘는 이상과의 괴리의 간격을 좁혀 일종의 개인적 불안을 극복하고자 함과 동시에 또래의 집단적 현상을 이해하고자 하는 행위를 이미지와 텍스트 그리고 책이라고 하는 다양한 매체를 통해 표현하고자 하는 시도가 돋보였다.

끝으로 수많은 공모 시스템을 통해 작가가 발굴되기도 하지만 그 결과는 중요하지 않다. 어쩌면 인생의 큰 부분을 차지할 수도 있는 창작의 긴 시간의 여정안에 아주 작은 순간을 할애해 자신의 작업을 돌아보고 타인의 객관적 의견을 들을 수 있는 기회를 가질 수 있다는 점에서 실패를 두려워 말고 도전해 보기를 바라며 그런 의미에서 지원자 모두의 용기에 큰 박수와 응원을 보낸다.

박지수

카메라를 들고 사진을 찍거나 영상을 찍는 일에 몰입하다 보면 나도 모르게 자꾸만 이미지의 힘을 믿게 된다. 카메라로 모든 걸 기록할 수 있고, 그 이미지로 모든 걸 이야기할 수 있다고…. 하지만 카메라와 이미지의 힘을 믿기엔 그 안에 담기는 세상은 이미 오래전부터 투명하지 않았고, 하나의 모습으로 고정되지 않았다. 게다가 사람의 의도로 만든 이미지와 소프트웨어의 알고리듬으로 만든 이미지의 구별이 점점 사라지는 지금의 시대에서 카메라와 이미지의 힘을 믿는 일은 광신도와 다를 바 없을 것 같다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 아직도 카메라와 이미지의 동네를 떠나지 못하는 한 사람으로서 여전히 믿어보고 싶은 구석이 있다면, 카메라와 이미지의 힘 그 자체가 아니라 카메라와 이미지를 만나고 나서야 비로소 발현되거나 변화하는 어떤 시선들이다. 이미 스스로 알고 있는 것을 의도와 의미라는 이름으로 장면에 주사하기보다는, 미처 스스로 알지 못했던 것들을 카메라와 이미지를 통해 발견하려는 그 시선과 조우하기를 기대하며 심사에 임했다. 박하은의 사진 작업 ‘Feeling in Between’은 20대 초반 인물들의 초상과 그들의 우울한 정서, 이들의 생활 환경과 주변 풍경들이 짜임새 있게 구성되었다. 그러면서도 청량한 톤의 인물사진, 색감이 돋보이는 풍경사진들이 감각적으로 다가온다. 자신이 경험한 우울감을 바탕으로 시선을 확장해 주변 또래 친구들의 상황을 함께 살피며 작업이 시작된다는 점, 작업 안에서 다루는 인물군들을 향한 작가의 인식과 시선을 선명하게 드러내고 있다는 점 그리고 인물과 풍경, 정물, 컬러와 흑백 등 다양한 방식을 구사해 작업을 구성한 점에서 긍정적으로 평가하기에 충분했다. 다만, 다분히 한쪽으로 치우친 인물군의 범위, 몇몇 이미지에서 드러나는 클리셰들, 자신의 설계한 작업적 키워드를 다소 삽화처럼 묘사하는 몇몇 풍경 이미지 등은 작업을 한 단계 성장시키기 위해 보완해야 할 숙제로 판단되었다.

윤정미

2023년 미래 작가상 심사에 많은 젊은 사진가들이 좋은 작업들을 출품해 주셨습니다. 그중에서 치열한 경쟁을 뚫고 선정된 사진부문 3명, 영상부문 2명 등 5분에게 축하의 인사를 건넵니다. 또한 이번 기회에는 아쉽게 선정되지 못한 젊은 작가들에게는 실망하거나 좌절하는 등 일희일비하지 말고 본인의 좋아하는 작업을 꾸준히 지속하기를 당부 드리고 싶습니다. 계속하다보면, 또 다른 좋은 기회가 여러분들을 기다리고 있을 겁니다.

사진작품을 심사하였을 때에도 좋은 작업들이 많이 눈에 들어왔습니다만, 총9명의 최종 인터뷰을 통하여 작가의 작업에 대한 깊이 있는 이야기를 들을 수 있어서 작가 여러분의 열의와 진솔함에 감동을 하였습니다. 그간 어떻게 작업을 진행시켜왔고, 어떤 생각을 가지고 작업을 하고 있는가 등을 알수 있었으며 세명의 심사위원들에게서 좋은 조언들을 들을 수 있어서 비록 금번에는 선정되지 않았어도, 그 시간을 통해 자신을 마주하고 객관화할수 있는 시간으로, 앞으로의 발전의 토대가 될 시간이었을 것입니다.

사진이란 예술 매체는 처음의 진입장벽이 낮고, 소재주의나 여러가지 면에서 참여하기 쉬운 쟝르입니다. 반면에 그에 따라 사진 작품이 상호간의 차이를 찾기 어려울 정도로 유사해지며, 그 시대와 유행의 파도에 쉽게 휩쓸리는 경향이 있습니다. 따라서 작가 스스로 자신의 중심을 잡아야합니다. 자신이 무엇을 좋아하는지, 어떤 것에 관심이 있는지, 자기 자신을 더욱 객관화하고 내면으로 침전하면서도, 동시에 외부의 세상을 바라보는 시선을 잊지 않고 있어야합니다. 타자와의 경쟁이 아닌, 자기자신의 작업 페이스를 유지하면서 지속해 가야 합니다.

다시 한번 이번에 선정된 김가은, 박하은, 송상현, 박정윤, 홍준협 5명의 젊은 작가들에게 진심으로 축하인사 전합니다. 아울러 사진과 영상 작가들을 위한 박건희문화재단의 꾸준한 도움주심에 감사드리며, 이번에 아쉽게도 떨어진 젊은 작가들에게도 응원을 전합니다.

General Review

The 2023 Mirae Award received a record number of 328 submissions. Many participants reinterpreted personal narratives or captured the surfaces of their subjects without filters, producing photographic images from distinct individual perspectives. From the first round of online review, nine artists were shortlisted, and through the second round of interviews, the jury unanimously selected five finalists.

Kim Gaeun’s Some, Some Scenes visualizes the emotional distance between herself and her mother, portraying her efforts to understand that relationship. Park Haeun’s Feeling in Between depicts the anxiety of those navigating the transitional phase of adulthood through portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Song Sanghyun’s Hospital traces the footsteps of poet Yun Dong-ju through photography, collecting visual records of his life and landscapes he might have seen. Park Jungyoon’s NECAMERAMANCY is an essay film that performs a kind of séance with an automatic film camera that holds special meaning for the artist. Hong Junhyeop’s Time Machine reveals the subtle emotions between two figures and invites viewers to enter the flow of their story naturally. (......)

Kim, Sejin

The Mirae Award introduced a video category in 2022. This year, three winners were selected in photography and two in video. The jury placed the greatest emphasis on each artist’s potential for further development, clarity and focus of the work’s theme, and understanding and mastery of the chosen medium.

Park Haeun’s photographs explore the elusive pain, fragility, and anxiety of adolescence and early adulthood. Her inquiry manifests through both the act of photographing and the theoretical search for the origins of these emotions. By narrowing the gap between the rigidity of reality and the ideals that transcend it, she attempts to overcome personal unease while reflecting on the collective experience of her generation. Her effort to express these ideas through images, text, and the book form was particularly notable.

Finally, while open calls can help discover emerging artists, the results do not matter most. The true value lies in taking a moment within one’s long creative journey to reflect, listen to others’ perspectives, and challenge oneself without fear of failure. For that courage, all applicants deserve applause and encouragement.

Park, Jisoo

When one becomes deeply immersed in photography or video, it is easy to start believing in the power of the image—to think that everything can be recorded and communicated through the camera. Yet the world within an image has long ceased to be transparent or singular. In an era when the distinction between human-made and algorithm-generated images is blurring, blind faith in the power of the camera can feel almost fanatical.

Still, as someone who cannot leave the realm of images, I continue to believe in not the power of the image itself, but in the perspectives that emerge and shift through encounters with it. Rather than imposing pre-existing meanings onto a scene, I look forward to meeting those unexpected discoveries that arise through the act of photographing.

Park Haeun’s photographic series Feeling in Between features well-composed portraits of people in their early twenties, their melancholic emotions, and the environments they inhabit. The cool tones and refined colors create a striking sensory experience. The work begins from the artist’s own sense of depression and expands outward to her peers, revealing her clear perspective and sensitivity toward her subjects. Her thoughtful combination of portraits, landscapes, still lifes, color, and black-and-white imagery makes the project compelling. However, the limited range of subjects, the occasional use of familiar visual tropes, and several images that illustrate her conceptual keywords too literally are areas that could be refined as her practice evolves.

Yoon, Jeongmee

This year’s Mirae Award received many excellent submissions from young photographers. Congratulations to the five finalists—three in photography and two in video—who were selected through a highly competitive process. To those who were not chosen, please do not be discouraged; continue working with passion, and new opportunities will surely come.

During the interviews with the nine finalists, the jury was deeply impressed by each artist’s sincerity and dedication. It was meaningful to hear how their projects developed and what ideas guided them. Even for those who were not selected, this was a valuable opportunity for self-reflection and growth.

Photography, as an artistic medium, has a low entry barrier and invites broad participation. Yet this accessibility often leads to works that resemble one another and are easily swayed by trends. Therefore, artists must cultivate their own center—understanding what truly interests them, observing the world while also looking inward, and continuing their practice at their own pace rather than competing with others.

Once again, heartfelt congratulations to the five awardees—Kim Gaeun, Park Haeun, Song Sanghyun, Park Jungyoon, and Hong Junhyeop—and gratitude to the Parkgeonhi Foundation for its continued support of photographers and video artists. Warm encouragement also goes to all the young artists who participated this year.
